First cruise ship at Kalundborg new West Port
Monday 22 April, the cruise ship “Magellan” called the New West Port in Kalundborg, as the first ship ever. The construction of the new port was completed just two weeks before the arrival.
The New West Port is Port of Kalundborg’s new port area, which has an area of total 330,000 m2, a 500 m. long quay, and 15 m. of water depth. This means that no cruise ship will be too big to call Kalundborg in the future.
Last week, the cruise ship “Magellan” from the British company Cruise & Maritime Voyages, had the honour of being the first ship to call the New West Port. The cruise call was handled in cooperation between the Port of Kalundborg, SDK Cruise as the ships agent and BDP Cruise as the tour operator.
Henning Schou, Director of SDK Cruise, says:
We in SDK Cruise are pleased about our good cooperation with the Port of Kalundborg. The new terminal is a welcomed addition, and we are positive that Kalundborg will attract many more cruise calls in the future.
To mark the special occasion, the Port of Kalundborg had arranged an “open port” event for the locals in Kalundborg together with the cruise passengers and crew on the quayside. This included vintage cars and motorcycles on the quayside, tents with refreshments and small shops, live music and entertainment.

We are thrilled to finally be able to welcome ships to our new terminal. Kalundborg has an ideal location, Both as a transit port and homeport, and from today, no cruise ship will be too big for our port.
Kalundborg is located about 100 km. from Copenhagen Airport, with only a bit more than an hour’s drive between the airport and the port. The T-route, which is the deep water entrance to the Baltic is just next to Kalundborg, making Kalundborg the smart sustainable choice for especially the larger cruise ships.
Captain Michail Margaritis, Master of M/V “Magellan”, says:
The port is very comfortable for large size vessels, and there is plenty of water depth. The services are excellent, both from sea and shore side.
During a cruise call in Kalundborg, about 65% of the cruise guests normally choose to go on a shore excursion to one of the many local attractions in the area, such as the various Viking sites and attractions, the breathtaking nature of the Røsnæs peninsular and many other sites. A lot of the cruise guests also choose to go on a day trip to Copenhagen due to the short distance from Kalundborg.
The remaining guests are normally enjoying a day in the town of Kalundborg, which is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Denmark. Here they can enjoy the shops and cafés in the pedestrian street, visit the medieval high town with a concert at the Church of our Lady, and a visit to the Museum.
The Port of Kalundborg always provide complimentary shuttle busses to the centre of town, and free admission for the cruise guests to the Museum and the concert at the Church of our Lady.
